Datadog vs Grafana Cloud: Monitoring, APM, Logs, Pricing, and Self-Hosted Options

Datadog and Grafana Cloud are the two leading observability platforms. Both offer monitoring, APM, logging, and dashboards. But they differ dramatically in pricing philosophy, self-hosting options, and ease of use. Here is the comparison.

Overview

Datadog is a fully managed, vertically integrated observability platform. It offers everything in one product with strong cross-product integration. Metrics, traces, and logs are correlated by default. The trade-off is cost and vendor lock-in.

Grafana Cloud is built around the open-source Grafana ecosystem. It uses Prometheus for metrics, Loki for logs, and Tempo for traces. You can self-host the entire stack or use Grafana Cloud for managed hosting. The trade-off is more setup complexity but lower cost and more flexibility.

Infrastructure Monitoring

Datadog's infrastructure monitoring is best in class. The agent installation is straightforward, the default dashboards are useful out of the box, and the alerting is well-integrated. Datadog discovers services automatically and surfaces key metrics without manual configuration.

Grafana Cloud uses the Prometheus agent or Grafana Agent for metric collection. Dashboards are customizable but require more setup to reach the same level of detail as Datadog's defaults. However, once configured, Grafana dashboards are more flexible and can display data from any source.

For organizations already using Prometheus in-house, Grafana Cloud is a natural extension. For teams starting fresh, Datadog's out-of-box experience is superior.

APM

Datadog APM is deeply integrated with the rest of the platform. Traces connect to metrics and logs automatically. Distributed tracing across services works well. Datadog supports automatic instrumentation for most languages and frameworks.

Grafana Cloud uses Grafana Tempo for traces. Tempo is a distributed tracing backend that works with OpenTelemetry. Setup requires more configuration than Datadog, but the OpenTelemetry integration means you are using an open standard rather than a proprietary agent.

Datadog APM is easier to set up and provides richer default views. Grafana Tempo is more flexible and uses open standards, making it better for heterogeneous environments.

Log Management

Datadog Log Management is a full-featured log analytics platform. Ingestion, parsing, indexing, and searching are all handled automatically. The log explorer is fast and supports complex queries. Logs correlate with traces and metrics by default.

Grafana Cloud uses Loki for log aggregation. Loki is designed to be cost-effective by indexing metadata rather than the full log content. This makes Loki significantly cheaper than Datadog for high-volume logging, but query capabilities are more limited.

If you need advanced log analytics and have the budget, Datadog is better. If you need cost-effective log storage and aggregation, Loki and Grafana Cloud are the better choice.

Pricing

Pricing is where the platforms diverge most dramatically. Datadog is expensive, especially at scale. Infrastructure monitoring starts at $15 per host per month. APM is $31 per host per month. Logs are $0.10 per GB ingested. A medium-sized deployment with 100 hosts can easily cost $5,000 per month or more.

Grafana Cloud is significantly cheaper. The free tier includes 10,000 metric series, 50 GB of logs, and 50 GB of traces per month. Paid plans start at $49 per month for 20,000 metric series. At the scale where Datadog costs thousands, Grafana Cloud costs hundreds.

The cost difference is the primary reason organizations switch from Datadog to Grafana Cloud. However, Datadog's integrated experience may justify the premium for teams that value time over money.

Self-Hosted Options

Grafana Cloud's killer feature is the ability to self-host. You can run the entire Grafana stack Prometheus, Loki, Tempo, and Grafana on your own infrastructure. Self-hosting is free for unlimited data. The cost is the infrastructure and engineering time to manage it.

Datadog has no self-hosted option. You must use their cloud platform. This is fine for most teams but problematic for organizations with data residency requirements or air-gapped environments.

For regulated industries or cost-sensitive organizations, Grafana's self-hosting option is decisive. For teams that want to avoid infrastructure management, Datadog's fully managed approach is simpler.

Migration Considerations

Datadog does not make it easy to export your data. Alert configurations, dashboards, and historical metrics are tied to the platform. Grafana Cloud supports Datadog agent data through a migration tool, but the process is not seamless.

Consider your future scale. Datadog costs grow linearly with infrastructure. Grafana Cloud costs grow more slowly. If you expect significant growth, Grafana Cloud's pricing model will save substantial money over time.

Choose Datadog if you have budget, want the best out-of-box experience, and value deep integration. Choose Grafana Cloud if you want lower costs, open standards, and the option to self-host.
