The choice between Webpack and Vite has become one of the most consequential decisions in modern frontend development. Webpack has been the dominant bundler for years, but Vite's emergence has fundamentally changed expectations for development experience and build performance. Development Server Performance
The most dramatic difference between Webpack and Vite is development server performance. Webpack bundles your entire application before serving it. For large projects, the initial build can take tens of seconds or minutes. Every code change triggers a rebuild, and while Webpack's Hot Module Replacement (HMR) is efficient, it still processes the changed module and its dependencies.
Vite takes a fundamentally different approach. During development, Vite serves modules directly as native ES modules. The browser imports modules on demand, so there is no bundling step. HMR replaces modules in milliseconds because Vite only needs to invalidate the changed module and its direct imports. The performance advantage grows with project size—Vite's dev server remains fast regardless of how large the project becomes.
Configuration
